Democracy

Our topics at a glance
One of the most important basic demands of Elise and Célestin Freinet was to “to give the children the floor“. We consistently follow this approach: in Freinet’s pedagogy, the learners have the “say in the matter” from the very beginning and thus determine their learning process. We promote democratic awareness and action together in the learning group. Everyone learns to exercise their right to co-determination and at the same time to show consideration for others.

Since I got to know the Freinet pedagogy, I approach everything I encounter in my everyday life with much more composure. I have confidence in the students’ willingness to learn and can really meet them at eye level. I get a lot back without demanding it.
The power of the group
Democracy in the learning group makes self-organized learning possible. Self-confidence is strengthened through cooperative forms of work, communication and interaction.
Give yourself and the learners “the floor”. Listening to everyone’s opinion and making it heard gives freedom. Establish a group council or class council in your everyday teaching and observe the changes in your learning group. In doing so, you are laying the foundations for the democratic capacity of our society.

In the group council, I see how children become courageous personalities and overcome their limits.
